Old-Time Music is a combination of many different styles of music.
The founding mother's and father's of America came with instruments from their original countries and living out in Rural areas
began to play tunes which now have been handed down from generation to generation mostly intact. I have presented a few tunes
on this web site to illustrate how the music sounds. I have been lucky enough to study the banjo and learn with great players
like Ray Alden, Bruce Molsky, Dan Levenson, Dwight Diller, and Alan Jabbor among many others! I appreciate their kindness and
generosity. The two banjos I play on this site are open back banjos. One has a Bacon Style C pot with a neck made by Will Fielding.
The other is a banjo made in the 1940's in Berkley Ca. I purchased at a tag sale in Arlington Vt. it has a skin head and gut strings.
I set my banjos up with high action and tend to play over the neck, not the pot for a soft plunky sound. Enjoy the music and play! Questions: banjofrailer@musician.org Tommy Jarrell, Matoki Slaughter, Fred Cockerham, Brad Leftwich, Bruce Molsky , Dan Levenson , Mac Benford, Richie Stearns. |
